An old stump left in the yard is a tripping hazard and gets in the way of mowing, landscaping or anything you want to plant in that spot. I grind it down below grade so there's nothing left to catch a mower blade or a foot, and grind out any surface roots that are causing the same problem.
The grindings can be left in place to fill the hole and settle, or hauled off if you'd rather have it cleared out completely. Either way, the goal is a flat, plantable spot where the stump used to be.
